If your child doesn't like sports and prefers to stay indoors watching TV or playing on electronic devices rather than running around outside, then you may be concerned that they aren't getting enough exercise. You may be looking for ways to get them moving more.
If your child likes music and dancing, then dance classes could be a sneaky way of getting them in shape. What are the benefits of signing them up for a class?
Dance Classes Don't Feel Like Exercise
Your child isn't likely to view dance classes in the same way they see other fitness activities. They may balk at joining a sports team or taking any kind of formal exercise no matter how much you encourage them.
However, taking dance lessons could just seem like a whole lot of fun. It probably won't be hard to get them to go along to a class that taps into their interests. You know that your child is getting some exercise from their classes. They may not realise this at all.
Dance Classes Have a Lot of Physical Benefits
Dance classes give your child a strenuous physical workout. They get exercise while they're warming up, practising steps and putting together routines.
As well as improving their general fitness levels, dance classes are likely to help with your child's overall physical development. Dancing builds things like strength, coordination, stamina and endurance. They'll get in better shape and improve their physical capabilities.
Dance Classes Make Your Child Feel Good
The endorphin rush your child gets when they take exercise is also likely to make them feel better in and about themselves. They'll view exercise more positively because it makes them feel good, even if they don't think about it consciously.
So, they may start to take more exercise than you expected. Their weekly class may give them a regular workout. But, if they start to enjoy the lessons, they'll be more likely to take this further.
For example, your child may start to practice dance steps, moves and routines at home to prepare for each class. This gives them additional fitness boosts. They may also want to try other classes in different types of dance.
Talk to local dance class organisers to see what is on offer. If your child is willing to try a class out, they may be able to go to a trial session to see if they enjoy it. Hopefully, this sets them on the path to getting more exercise.
